LSU Health Shreveport is home to the only medical school in north Louisiana and one of only three in the state. Medical students interact with patients from their very first semester and learn from a combination of lectures, small groups, standardized patient exercises and clinical skills throughout their training.

For almost fifty years, LSU Health Shreveport has been educating healthcare professionals who excel at the highest levels in academia, private practice and industry. Students consistently rave over experiencing a rigorous education in a family atmosphere where diversity and success are celebrated. Further strengthening the student experience are vibrant, safe communities in north Louisiana which offer an affordable cost of living.

For those with a heightened interest in research, the school offers joint PhD programs with both the School of Graduate Studies and Louisiana Tech. Students can also opt to enroll in the Research Distinction Track to or apply to become part of the American Medical Student Research Journal, founded in 2013 by our medical students. The School of Medicine counts a Faculty of over 500 with a class size of 150 for fall 2019. Plans are underway to increase class size to 200 over the upcoming years. This expansion is being made possible due to the construction of the Center for Medical Education and Wellness.

The School of Medicine offers a four-year, system-based learning curriculum leading to the MD degree, but other degree options are available to address specific interests of students. We understand that the process of applying to medical school can be overwhelming, and we have tried to anticipate and address as many questions as possible.

FAMILY DAY AT THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Each school year family members and friends of medical school students visit the LSU Health Shreveport campus for the annual Family Day event.

Family Day is an opportunity for friends and family members to get a first-hand look at what students experience during their four years in medical school. They tour campus and learn more about student life, academic programs and medical school curriculum, along with the various clinical skills labs and hands-on learning opportunities available to students.

MEDICAL STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM

Each summer medical students work with a faculty mentor on a research project that is then showcased during the fall at our annual presentation fair. In addition to being able to share their work, there is also an opportunity to receive an award in each prize category. This program fosters research activity, inspires students to learn more about the research process and generates quality research evidence.

Gold Humanism Honor Society Student of the Month, Dani Handrop

Congratulations to the November Gold Humanism Honor Society Student of the Month, Mariah Allen! Mariah is a third year medical student who continuously demonstrates compassion and empathy when dealing with her patients. She makes every effort to reduce her patient’s anxiety and discomfort in any way possible. For example, a patient was very anxious about her surgery and was in a lot of pain. Mariah distracted her while the patient was being prepped by asking about her personal life and musical interests. While the rest of the team was performing the procedure, Mariah played the patient’s favorite music on her phone and held her hand throughout the entire procedure. In a similar situation, a very nervous pediatric patient was getting sutures placed and Mariah distracted him by talking about his favorite super heroes. The patient didn't even realize the sutures were placed until it was over!  Mariah's dedication to her patient’s comfort is admirable; she truly exemplifies a humanistic approach in medicine.
