Our Clinical Programs

Critical Care Medicine

As the only academic medical center in a 200+ mile radius, we serve as the referral center for the most complicated critically ill patients.  Specialized ICU care happens in our Medical, Neurologic, Regional Burn Center/ Burn ICU, and Trauma/ Surgical ICUs, and our intensivist offer advanced technologies to provide the highest levels of care.  We also offer an eICU program at our sister hospital in Monroe, using telemedicine to keep patients closer to home while providing high level ICU care remotely.

Our intensivists participate in a number of specialized programs for the critically ill, including the advanced stroke certification for Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC), American College of Surgeons designated Level 1 Trauma Center, and ELSO Gold Level Center of Excellence in the provision of ECMO/ extracorporeal life support.

Pulmonary & Critical Care Clinical Programs

Interventional Pulmonology

Our Section specializes in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures as well as advanced pleural procedures. Using linear endobronchial ultrasound, we provide minimally-invasive tissue diagnosis of lesions in the mediastinum and hilum as well as lymph node staging in cases of lung cancer. Using radial endobronchial ultrasound and electromagnetic navigation, we provide tissue diagnosis of peripheral lung nodules with a reduced rate of pneumothorax compared to transthoracic biopsy. We use multi-modality therapy to relieve central airway obstruction from both cancerous and non-cancerous sources. We also provide advanced procedures to reduce symptoms of recurrent pleural effusions and work closely with our thoracic surgeons to provide diagnostic thoracoscopy services for undiagnosed pleural disease. We also provide advanced therapies for treatment-refractory asthma and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.

Our department offers the following procedures:

  • Linear and radial endobronchial ultrasound
  • Electromagnetic navigation
  • Rigid bronchoscopy
  • Covered metal and silicone airway stents
  • Cryotherapy, electrocautery, argon plasma coagulation, and laser therapy for tissue ablation
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Thoracentesis and tube thoracostomy
  • Tunneled pleural catheter (PleurX) placement
  • Bronchial thermoplasty
  • Whole lung lavage

Pulmonary Diseases

Our faculty offer care in the treatment of a variety of respiratory diseases, and are committed to a multidisciplinary approach that empowers patients to manage their disease.  In addition to general pulmonary medicine, we have disease-specific clinics with specialized expertise in pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, and interstitial lung disease.  We offer a gateway to the Lung Transplant Program at Ochsner in New Orleans, and are developing an Advanced Lung Diseases clinic.
