Family Medicine Residency - Monroe
The Family Medicine Residency Program of LSU Health Shreveport in Monroe utilizes a unique combination of resources. First, there are no other primary care residencies with whom Family Medicine Residents must share educational opportunities. This leads to the opportunity to learn by doing rather than learning by observation. In the long run, we believe that physicians are most comfortable with those things which they have learned by doing.
A second strength of the program is the diversity of faculty. The Family Medicine Department is composed of Board Certified Family Physicians and Internists. The close personal and working relationships between faculty and the residents create a milieu which is conducive to medical education. The residency plays an integral role in the provision of health care to a medically underserved population of more than 300,000. There is a tremendous opportunity to see a diversity of pathology in the full spectrum of its clinical stages.
Family Medicine Clinic in Monroe
The Ochsner LSU Health Monroe Family Medicine Center (FMC) was completed in 1983. It is housed in a free-standing building adjacent to the hospital. With over 10,100 square feet, it provides a spacious, well-designed area for efficient family medical care. 1500 patients are seen each month in this clinic. Patient examining rooms, laboratory facilities, and a comfortable waiting area are located on the ground floor level. Full-time faculty offices, the OLH-M Medical Library, and a classroom are located on the second floor of the building.
The Clinic plays an integral role in the Family Medicine Residency Program and is the major component of the educational experience in longitudinal family medicine. Here residents care for families during all three years of training. Residents are given increasing responsibility and independence as they mature and advance through their training. Patient numbers are scheduled commensurate with resident experience.
