FACULTY PRECEPTORS

Logan Atkins, MD
Dr. Atkins is a 2015 graduate of the Alexandria Family Medicine Residency Program.  He received his medical degree from LSU Health – Shreveport.  Dr. Atkins is a Hospitalist in Winnsboro at Franklin Medical Center’s Rural Health Clinic.

Brian Elkins, MD
Dr. Elkins served as the Alexandria Family Medicine Program Director from 2005 to 2013.  A graduate of LSUHSC-Shreveport, he was the 2008 LAFP Family Physician of the Year.  Dr. Elkins also precepts in the Procedures Clinic performing endoscopy, newborn circumcision, vasectomy, exercise stress testing, colposcopy, cervical cryotherapy and dermatologic surgery.  He is currently practicing at Central Louisiana Health and Wellness Center

Derek Johnson, MD
Dr. Johnson practices Family Medicine in Jena, Louisiana, located in LaSalle parish in affiliation with LaSalle General Hospital.  He is a preceptor for our rural community-based rotation in Jena.   He also precepts in the residency clinic. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the Alexandria residency program, a former Chief Resident and earned his M.D. from LSU Health – New Orleans.

Charles Norwood, MD
Dr. Norwood practices as a Family Medicine physician in the central Louisiana area.  He is a graduate and fellow of LSU Health Sciences Center.  He has worked with the program in various capacities since its’ inception, and is currently a resident preceptor in the program’s Continuity Clinic.   Dr. Norwood also has extensive Emergency Medicine and Urgent 
Care experience.

Darien Slaughter, MD
Dr. Slaughter is a preceptor for our rural community-based rotation in Lecompte where he is a physician of Cenla Family Medicine Center in Lecompte, Louisiana, a part of the Rapides Regional Medical Center Group.  A graduate of LSU Health-Shreveport, Dr. Slaughter has worked with the residency since 2000, currently as clinic preceptor.  He is also an Emergency Medicine Specialist, and has 18 years of experience and practices in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
