Clinical Sites

Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport hospital

At the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport hospital, Endocrinology and Metabolism is responsible for providing clinical services to inpatients and outpatients. We hold 3 half-day clinics attended by faculty, fellows, medicine residents, and assorted students. In addition, the clinical faculty members see other patients individually in their personal clinics. Inpatient consultations for diabetes or any other endocrine disorder are seen 7 days week.

Drs. David Scarborough, Steven Levine, Kamal Bhusal, and Rajini Kanth Yatavelli staff the consult service (inpatients and outpatients) several months a year and may cover general medicine inpatient teams as well.

Dr. Scarborough plays a central role in the education of undergraduate medical students. He is the course director for the Endocrinology, Reproductive & GU Course for 2nd year students, as well as for the Integrative Course for 2nd year students. He also serves on the Medical Curriculum Council. Dr. Levine staffs Professor's Rounds for 3rd year clerks. Both Dr. Levine and Dr. Scarborough are Copping Award winners for Outstanding Clinical Educator of the year. Dr. Levine has numerous awards from residents for being the Outstanding Teaching Attending of the year. Dr. Bhusal joined the section in 2016 and Dr. Yatavelli in 2018.

Overton Brooks VA Medical Center

Our VA Section Chief, Dr. Surender Arora, joined the Overton Brooks VAMC in 2007 and has a keen interest in bone metabolism and bone disorders, primarily osteoporosis. Dr. Joshua Maier joined the VA faculty in 2012 after completing his Endocrinology fellowship here at LSU Health Shreveport. He is involved in medical education at several stages, serving as the Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship and assisting in the education of residents, medical students and allied health students.
The VA Endocrinology Section provides referral outpatient and consultative inpatient sub-specialty care to Veterans. The VA provides multiple half-day clinics during the week, including ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration thyroid biopsy clinics and a dedicated half-day diabetes clinic. Clinics are attended by VA staff, fellows, medicine residents, and students. All patients in the VA clinics are seen personally by a staff physician along with a trainee for provision of joint management and learning. Consultative sub-specialty inpatient services are provided 7 days a week. The VA Section also provides expert interpretation of bone density testing via Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA).

VA Endocrinology staff are supported by administrative assistants, a bone densitometry technologist, and Certified Diabetes Educators. VA Staff collaborate with LSU Health Shreveport faculty in the education of fellows, residents, medical students, and PA students.
