Sadie Rice was selected to give an oral presentation at the DNA Tumor Virus Meeting held in Trieste, Italy July 9-12, 2019. Dr. Bodily also gave an oral presentation. 

Sadie Rice was recently awarded a Carroll Feist Predoctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Matthew Scott graduated with his PhD in Microbiology on April 25, 2019.

The laboratory was awarded a Center of Excellence in Arthritis and Rheumatology (CEAR) Research Award to better understand how signals from the stromal microenvironment suppress HPV replication in infected epithelia.

Research

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the causative agents of cervical and other cancers.  As part of their normal life cycles, these small DNA viruses infect stratified epithelia and establish persistent infections, usually resulting in minor hyperproliferation, but occasionally progressing to malignancy. The goal of the laboratory is understand the evolved functions of HPV oncogenes in sustaining persistent, productive viral infection and how those functions are dysregulated during cancer development. We can model all phases of the viral life with both wild-type and genetically modified viruses using a variety of cell culture techniques, including organotypic culture, to establish persistent HPV infections in vitro.

We have discovered that the HPV oncogenes E5 and E7 regulate overlapping sets of genes that regulate the interaction between infected epithelia and cells of the stromal microenvironment, with particular impact on innate immunity. We have discovered that signals from stromal fibroblasts are critical for controlling HPV infection in the epithelium. Current work in the laboratory explores the molecular mechanisms behind this regulation and how these and other interactions facilitate the viral life cycle and set the stage for cancer development.

Research: Human papillomaviruses regulate host and viral gene expression to create an environment in which the virus can persist and replicate. My project focuses on the viral oncoprotein E7 and its abilty associate with transcriptional regulators in chromatin to modify gene expression patterns.
