Common Billing Questions

Why does LSUHSC- Huey P Long charge for treatment?
We must pay for the medicine, supplies and equipment we use to treat you. We also must pay the doctors, nurses and all the employees who care for you.

Is medical care at LSUHSC-Huey P Long free?
Only needy Louisiana residents can qualify for free care. When registering you must complete an application for free care and give proof of your income level and family size to apply for free care.

Will I get a bill?
You will get a bill if you do not have health insurance. If you have health insurance and showed a current insurance card when you checked in, we will file your insurance claim for you. If your health insurance does not pay the bill in full, you will be billed for the remainder of the balance.

Do you accept Medicare and Medicaid?
Yes. We will file bills to Medicare and Medicaid on your behalf, if you have coverage on the date charges were incurred. If you have a Medicaid Community Care Card, a referral must be received prior to your visit or you must bring a referral from your Primary Care Physician with you to your appointment.

Do I have to pay anything now?
If your illness is not covered by your health insurance policy, you may apply for free care treatment for the non-covered services only. Your other accounts will be filed to your insurance. If you do not have Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, or you are not a Louisiana resident you will be required to pay $15.00 in advance of Clinic visits; $10.00 in advance of Ancillary Services (Xrays, Physical Therapy, etc); $100.00 in advance of Ambulatory Surgery. Deposits for services are not required in an Emergency Room setting at this time.
