Nephrology

Welcome from the Chief

Welcome to the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at LSU Health Shreveport. The Division provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease and hypertension. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases and hypertension, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation of the kidney and pancreas, placement of tunneled catheters for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and thrombolysis and angioplasty of clotted and dysfunctional vascular accesses for hemodialysis.

This Division also offers a fully accredited Nephrology Fellowship Training Program. The program is run by full-time academic faculty is designed to train nephrologists for academic careers and clinical practice. Fellows learn to manage a variety of renal disorders in the inpatient and outpatient setting and become adept at performing kidney biopsies and placing central lines for hemodialysis. Interventional Nephrology training is part of the two-year fellowship program. A third-year Interventional Nephrology Fellowship is available to trainees from other programs who have completed their 2-year nephrology fellowship.

Our faculty members are enthusiastic teachers who participate in teaching medical students, medicine residents and nephrology fellows. The Medicine Residency Program Director and Student Clerkship Director are faculty members of the Nephrology Division. Four members of the Division including our Nephrology Fellowship Program Director provide hands-on training in Interventional Nephrology to our Fellows. Our Division is recognized nationally as a training center for interventional nephrologists. I am a past President of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN) and several of our faculty serve on committees of the ASDIN.

I invite you to explore our website for more information on about our program.

With warmest regards,
Dr. Kenneth Abreo, Chief of Nephrology

OUR SERVICES

Our clinical programs include active inpatient services, outpatient peritoneal dialysis units, hemodialysis units, and Interventional Nephrology unit.

We currently see over 1,000 new consults each year, make over 6,000 bedside visits, perform over 6,000 dialyses in the hospital, perform more than 1,200 dialysis access procedures, care for over 400 dialysis patients in our outpatient units, and provide for hundreds of telemedicine care visits each year.

PHILOSOPHY

Ours is a close-knit, people-oriented program, emphasizing all aspects of nephrology – consultation, primary care, dialysis, and interventional.  We provide a major portion of the education of our medical students, as well as extensive post-graduate training in Nephrology.  Our Fellows assume primary, hands-on responsibility for patient care under the guidance of experienced clinicians.  While we are proud of our training program and the quality of our trainees; we are constantly striving to make the program better, and to adapt to the forces of change in our filed. The challenge to the physicians and the employees of the department is to balance Patient Expectations, Patient Needs, and Available Resources to achieve Patient Satisfaction and Quality Care. We believe this can best be accomplished within a culture of mutual trust and respect.

Many of our clinical faculty members are leaders in their fields and enjoy national and international reputations. They participate in key national committees and serve in leadership roles in major national and international medical societies. They are truly engaged in the advancement of medical knowledge.
