Depending on the case, the patients have worn pierced earrings for many years and the pierced hole gradually widens over time. Some can be surgically remedied during an office visit under local anesthesia. There are several techniques used for reconstruction of the earlobe. The technique used will vary depending on the severity, but in most cases the skin lining the slot is removed creating a raw edge to rebuild.

Swelling, redness and tenderness is expected after reconstruction but should only last a few days. Patients should wait two to three months before wearing pierced earrings again.
