Telemedicine

Telemedicine is the delivery of healthcare and the exchange of healthcare information across distances using telecommunication technology. Simply stated, even though you and your specialist are miles apart, new technology allows doctors to examine patients while they are at their local hospitals. It is like you are talking face-to-face with them. It allows you and your specialist to speak confidentially and securely to each other as if you were in the same room.

Who is Eligible?

Patients that need to be seen by a specialist who is not available in their community can have an appointment by telemedicine. The great thing about telemedicine is that you will be seen by a specialist in Shreveport without leaving your rural community. Your local doctor will contact LSUHSC in Shreveport to set up the specialty appointment for you.

**Remember that your primary care doctor will still monitor your care and you should contact him/her if you have questions concerning your telemedicine appointment.

How it Works!!

Patients go to their local community hospital for their specialty appointment just like they would for a normal doctor's visit. The rural hospital will have a medical representative in the exam room with you to explain the process of telemedicine. A television and camera like the one below will be in your exam room so that you can see and speak with your specialist. Special cameras and tools enable doctors to listen to your heart or chest and look in your ears, mouth or other parts of your body.

You will be asked to sign a "telemedicine consent" form before the appointment and we would appreciate you filling out a "patient satisfaction form" after the visit is complete. We want to make sure that you are completely satisfied with the quality of care that you receive during your telemedicine visit.

Who Pays for this Visit?

Payment for telemedicine services has been approved for Medicaid or Medicare patients. However, coverage for telemedicine services by private or commercial insurance is on a case-by-case basis and you should check with your individual carrier for details.
