Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport (LSUHSC-S) serves a metropolitan area of over 300,000 in an attractive, progressive city in Northwest Louisiana. LSU University Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center, Organ Transplantation Center, and major tertiary medical referral center for East Texas, Southern Arkansas, and the northern half of Louisiana. The Health Sciences Center has full-time department heads in all clinical services with accredited residency training programs. There is also a strong basic science faculty with separate departments who work closely with the clinical services. A 10-story Biomedical Research Center adjoining LSUHSC-S opened in 1994. Recent clinical additions include a Comprehensive Cancer Center, Women's and Children's Center, and an Ambulatory Care Center.
The full-time urologic academic faculty is dedicated to resident and student teaching and supervision. Several clinical and basic science research programs have developed with emphasis in the areas of urologic oncology, laparoscopy/endourology, stone management, voiding dysfunction / urodynamics, female urology & pelvic recontructive surgery, and pediatric urology.
The Department of Urology has administrative offices and adjacent research space in the LSU Medical School building. The clinical service is headquartered in LSU University Hospital and has an in-patient ward, a busy outpatient facility, and pediatric urology, female urology, and urologic oncology sections. The clinical Urodynamic Research Laboratory and Endourology Suites are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art fluoroscopic tables and ultrasonographic and urodynamic equipment, the latest generation lithotripsy technology, and a dual-console daVinci robot and state-of-the-art surgical simulators. A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanner and radiopharmaceutical cyclotron are located in the adjacent Biomedical Research Building and are available for both clinical and research use. The training program also utilizes the nearby Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is supervised by the full-time Urology faculty. Additional clinical material for resident training is available on the Urology service maintained at the Willis Knighton Health System Hospitals — a full-service private health care system also equipped with multiple surgical robots.
Medical students can take a two-week elective clinical clerkship during their third year, supplemented by sophomore didactic lectures. Fourth year medical students may elect to take a one month Urology "Subinternship" elective. The service often has one to two general interns who rotate through Urology on an elective basis. Academic projects, both in clinical and research laboratory areas are encouraged and supported. There is broad clinical experience, supplemented by didactic weekly teaching activities, to provide a unique educational exposure to all aspects of Adult & Pediatric Urology.
