Faculty physicians, board-certified in both General Surgery and Critical Care Medicine, are available 24 hours a day to provide quality care for patients through the Division of Trauma and Critical Care. We have a special interest in the care of injured patients. Trauma remains the number one cause of death in the United States. They types of injuries range from motor vehicle crashes to falls and penetrating trauma like gun shots and knife stabs. Our surgeons are recognized for their expertise in treating patients with these severe injuries and critical illnesses.
Trauma and Critical Care physicians are available to admit patients through the Emergency Room, accept transfers from other institutions, and for in-house consultations. We are a regional referral center for seriously injured and critically ill patients. These patients are referred from the northern Louisiana as well as areas of east Texas and south Arkansas.
In 1991, our Trauma Center at LSU Medical Center became the first verified Level I Trauma Center in Louisiana, only four years after the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma established its Consultation/Verification Program in 1987. The ACS program promotes development of trauma centers that address the entire spectrum of needs of all injured patients from the pre-hospital phase to the rehabilitation process.
Our mission is to:
- Provide quality trauma and critical care to all the people of our region
- Advance the field of Trauma and Critical Care through excellence in teaching and research
- Establish effective programs to injury prevention.
Our injury prevention programs use evidence-based strategies to prevent injury and break the cycle of violence in our community.
