Institute for Cardiovascular Disease & Imaging: In 1985, Malcolm Feist donated his estate to the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for the explicit purpose of supporting "research in cardiovascular disease". The Feist estate included several hundred acres of farmland, some of which is situated in a rapidly growing commercial zone in the southeastern section of Shreveport. LSUHSC-S created an endowment from revenue generated from the sale of some of the real estate holdings in Shreveport as well as gas/oil royalties produced from property holdings outside the city. The endowment now exceeds $40 million. In 2003, Chancellor McDonald established the Institute for Cardiovascular Disease & Imaging and appointed a Board of Directors of the Institute to develop a strategy for investment of revenue generated from the Malcolm Feist bequest into the growth and expansion of cardiovascular research on the LSUHSC-S campus. The Board meets with and advises the Chancellor on matters related to the allocation of endowment (and gas/oil royalty) revenue for projects initiated by the Board as well as faculty-initiated proposals. Priority has been given to investing revenue into seed packages for new faculty recruits with research programs in the cardiovascular sciences, establishing endowed chairs in cardiovascular research, acquiring state of-the art technology to enhance research competitiveness, and supporting intramural grants and fellowships in the area of cardiovascular research.
