Post-Operative IV Sedation For Children
● Your child may seem awake and alert, but the effect of the medicine last for 12 to 24 hours.
● Some of the side effects could include: nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, dizziness, and poor balance.
● Keep your child at home and watch closely for the next 12 hours.
● Protect him/her from falls, sharp objects, pets, and from other possibly dangerous situations.

Baby
|
- Stay with your baby. He or she should not be left alone to play or move about.
- After your baby has been awake one hour, he or she should be given the usual baby food and drink.

Toddler and School Age
|
- Your child should not be left alone and should not play alone.
- Help him/her with stairs. A quiet day at home is best.
- No bike riding, swimming, or other such activities today.
- After your child has been awake for one hour and keeps down clear liquids, you may offer milk products and solid foods.
- Give liquids often to your child.

Teenager
|
- Your teenager should not be alone today.
- Help him/her with stairs.
- Do not allow him/her to drive, swim, ride a bike, or play sports today.
- After your teenager has kept down clear liquids for an hour, he or she may have milk products and then solid foods.

A child who cannot feed himself/herself or needs special care
|
- Do not leave your child alone.
- Help your child with equipment, positioning or moving around.
- Once your child has kept down clear liquids for one hour, offer the usual diet when tolerable.
- Do not allow your child to eat alone today.
|
Clear liquids include: apple juice, popsicles, Sprite, Seven-Up, Pedialyte and so forth.
