Fellowships
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery fosters 2 fully accredited fellowship programs to advance the scope of the standard Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery practice. Each fellowship program offered accepts 1 fellow per year. All fellows must have completed an accredited Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program prior to matriculation into the fellowship.
The Department of OMFS offers a 2-year fully-accredited fellowship in Head & Neck Oncologic / Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. The fellowship training is provided at LSUHSC-Shreveport, as well as both the Willis-Knighton North and South Campuses. The Fellowship in Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery was established in 2006, and has since graduated 5 fellows, with the current fellow set for graduation in June 2013. We have been able to provide continued care for patients from Northwest Louisiana, West Mississippi, South Arkansas, and East Texas with expertise in all aspects of head & neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction.
In addition, the Department established a 1-year fully-accredited fellowship in Cleft & Craniofacial Surgery that began in July 2011 and recently graduated its first fellow in June 2012. The bulk of the fellow's training takes place at LSUHSC-Shreveport and the Willis-Knighton South Campus. A newly established partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children in Shreveport has afforded the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery the opportunity to provide additional advanced cleft and craniofacial care for patients from Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.
