LSU Health Shreveport awarded degrees to 173 students during commencement exercises at the Centenary Gold Dome in Shreveport this morning. Six additional students whose degrees were conferred in December were recognized.
Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for the School of Medicine Mark Platt, PhD, presided over the commencement activities. The Most Reverend Michael G. Duca, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Shreveport, gave the invocation and benediction. Chancellor Robert Barish, MD MBA, and School of Medicine Class of 2012 President Raphiel Heard delivered the welcome and introductions.
James Andrews, MD, of Birmingham was the featured commencement speaker. Dr. Andrews is internationally known and recognized for his skills as an orthopedic surgeon, as well as his scientific and clinic research contributions in injury prevention and treatment.
Joseph McCulloch, PhD, Dean of the School of Allied Health Professions, Sandra Roerig, PhD, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Andrew Chesson, Jr., MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, presented the candidates, while William Jenkins, DVM PhD, Interim President of the Louisiana State University System, conferred the degrees.
After receiving their diplomas, School of Medicine graduates took the Oath of Hippocrates reciting in part, “I do solemnly swear by that which I hold most sacred that I will be loyal to the Profession of Medicine and just and generous to its members. That I will lead my life and practice my Art in uprighteousness and honor.”
“This is a bittersweet occasion, since we will be saying goodbye to the graduates who will be moving on to new locations, but we are also pleased that many will remain either in our residency programs or as new staff and faculty members on our campus,” said Chancellor Barish. “Regardless, today is the culmination of a lot of hard work, talent and dedication. Our students are poised for success.”
