Dr. Roger H. Kim, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Head of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, recently performed a robotic-assisted laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication to treat a patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease July 18. This was the first robotic-assisted procedure performed in the Department of Surgery with the daVinci Surgical System at LSU Health Shreveport. The daVinci system, which was made possible by the LSUHS Foundation, has been previously used by other physicians at LSU Health to treat gynecologic, urologic, and otolaryngologic diseases.
Dr. Kim plans to use the robotic system to treat a number of conditions including gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, and paraesophageal hernias, as well as for the minimally invasive treatment of malignancies including esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer.
