High school students from Caddo and Bossier Parish Districts will be selected as program participants for the eight week Jumpstart Summer Enrichment Program. Students are exposed to intense hands-on research activities conducted by LSUHSC-S faculty who serve as program mentors. Selected students will work in a research laboratory or clinical setting 40 hours per week for eight weeks. Each Thursday, students are provided supplemental enrichment activities, which include: library, hospital, and animal care tours, lectures by health care professionals and motivational films. At the end of the program, students present the results of their research projects at a poster session which demonstrates their scientific writing skills and ability to evaluate scientific data. Students are encouraged to pursue careers in medicine, research or allied health professions.

Selection Criteria:

  • Students Grades 9-12
  • Caddo/Bossier Parish Resident
  • 16 years of age by the start of the program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Official Transcript

The Jumpstart Summer Enrichment Program (JSEP) is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. The program targets students interested in pursuing careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Research or Allied Health Professions. The JSEP program allows area high school students the opportunity to participate in eight weeks of hands-on research activities mentored by faculty at LSUHSC-S. The program will run from June 1, 2017 – July 28, 2017.

  3. Transcript. Transcripts for all schools attended must be submitted as part of the application process.  You may obtain a transcript through the counselor's office.  Transcripts can be mailed directly to the Office of Multicultural Affairs, 1501 Kings Highway, P.O. Box 33932, Shreveport, Louisiana 71130-3932.  
  4. Letter of Recommendation.  Please submit a Letter of Recommendation by a science teacher who is familiar with your academic performance and personal attributes: strengths, weaknesses, attitude and character. Letters of Recommendation may be mailed directly or submitted electronically to: srober1@lsuhsc.edu. Please submit Letters of Recommendation on official school letterhead stationary only.
  5. Description of Disadvantaged Status (Refer to Section C).
  6. Age.  Participants must be age 16 by June 1, 2017. An application for student employment will be provided by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
  7. Essay.  Describe in 200 words or less your career goals and why you wish to participate in the JSEP Program.
